{"id":5294,"date":"2021-01-19T08:57:28","date_gmt":"2021-01-18T21:57:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.obrien.com.au\/?p=5294"},"modified":"2022-06-23T11:01:39","modified_gmt":"2022-06-23T01:01:39","slug":"cars-and-windscreens-of-the-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.obrien.com.au\/articles\/cars-and-windscreens-of-the-future\/","title":{"rendered":"Cars and Windscreens Of The Future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Consumers are constantly\u00a0looking for faster, more economical, more sustainable, more comfortable and safer\u00a0ways to get from point\u00a0A\u00a0to point B\u00a0and, as\u00a0our cars change to accommodate our needs, so too do our windscreens.<\/p>\n<p>More and more technology\u00a0is\u00a0being built into windscreens and as things like\u00a0heads up display (more on that later)\u00a0become common practice,\u00a0O&#039;Brien<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0stays close to the changing technology and adapts accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>Already in operation in Australia is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.obrien.com.au\/autoglass\/adas-windscreen-calibration\/\">Cal-Tech<sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/a>, an innovative recalibration solution for various types of vehicles that O&#039;Brien<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> has\u00a0developed in partnership with\u00a0BOSCH. Cal-Tech<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> is available at all O&#039;Brien<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> AutoGlass branches and means the\u00a0advanced driver assist systems\u00a0(ADAS) built into a car\u00a0(parking assist, adaptive cruise control and blind-spot detectors are just some examples) are recalibrated at the same time the windscreen is replaced or repaired.<\/p>\n<p>In Australia, the number of vehicles on the road, equipped with driver assistance technology,\u00a0is estimated to jump from 21% in 2019 to 46% by 2025. O&#039;Brien<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0has\u00a0seen\u00a0a 175% increase in demand for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.obrien.com.au\/autoglass\/adas-windscreen-calibration\/\">Cal-Tech<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> ADAS Recalibration<\/a>\u00a0in the last 12-months and\u00a0continues to work with leading industry players and research institutions to make sure we&#8217;re always at the cutting edge of this developing technology.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to what is in the\u00a0pipeline\u00a0for automotive technology, this is just the tip of the iceberg.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Chris Davies, Head of Technical Research and Innovation at Belron<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0Technical (part of Belron<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, which is the\u00a0parent company of O&#039;Brien Australia) shared with us some insights on what we can\u00a0expect into 2021 and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Spoiler alert \u2013 no\u00a0time travelling hovercrafts\u00a0on the horizon just yet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:\u00a0What will be the biggest change to windscreen technology this year?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A:\u00a0We don\u2019t expect a radical change in windscreen technology this year, but the steady growth of\u00a0forward-facing\u00a0camera fitment will continue.\u00a0 In\u00a0Europe, it will be mandatory for vehicle manufacturers to introduce\u00a0advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS)\u00a0into their new models by 2022 and on all models sold by 2024, with a consortium pushing for a similar introduction in the US.\u00a0 This means that camera fitment is set to\u00a0grow\u00a0and we expect that these will be fitted to 100% of new vehicles from 2024 in Europe.\u00a0 We also anticipate steady growth in heads up display (HUD) technology fitment over time as vehicle manufacturers focus more on safety and ensuring that drivers stay\u00a0focused\u00a0on the road ahead.\u00a0 The new Mercedes S Class has an augmented reality windscreen where not only is vehicle performance information, such as speed and fuel levels, projected on the screen, but also additional driver relevant information such as navigation instructions.\u00a0 These technologies will not only impact the windscreen complexity and the installation\u00a0process but\u00a0could also require additional recalibration steps as the functionality is dependent on the\u00a0forward-facing\u00a0camera.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Q:\u00a0Could you\u00a0explain a bit more about augmented technology in windscreens and how this will be used in the future?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A:\u00a0Heads up display (HUD) and Augmented Reality (AR)\u00a0windscreens are intended to keep the driver\u00a0focused\u00a0on the road ahead\u00a0by providing essential information in their line of sight, rather than on another device\u00a0in the car.\u00a0 Our glass suppliers consistently inform us that they are working on AR projects with the vehicle manufacturers and that they expect to launch products\u00a0in the near future.\u00a0 If the AR system is to overlay road and route relevant information onto the\u00a0glass\u00a0then the technology must know what is\u00a0in\u00a0front of the vehicle and where the driver is looking.\u00a0 This means that we expect the ADAS system forward-facing camera to monitor the road ahead and also potentially driver-facing cameras will be required for seamless operation.\u00a0 The complexity of an AR windscreen will probably impact on the cost of materials and will add to the difficulty of the replacement job in future with recalibration of the camera\/s and adjustment of relevant projection optics being needed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:\u00a0How far away is this technology?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A:\u00a0Mercedes is already introducing this technology on their premium level S-Class, but we expect this to filter down to other models over time.\u00a0 Over the next 2 to 3\u00a0years\u00a0we expect other vehicle manufacturers to introduce this technology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:\u00a0How will O&#039;Brien<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0technology have to adapt to cater to this new technology?
